SCOPE Miami is the original emerging contemporary art fair, returning for its seventh year to Miami this December. Expanded in size and global in reach, SCOPE will host 88 exhibitors from 22 countries in a new 60,000-square-foot pavilion. SCOPE’s central new location in the Wynwood Art District is convenient to both the Rubell Family Collection and the Margulies Collection, as well as Miami’s top galleries. Glowlab is proud and delighted to continue our collaboration with one of the most well-respected and exciting fairs in the global art market, fresh off of the wildly successful SCOPE Hamptons last summer.

Glowlab is excited to present a solo exhibition by Valencia-based artist Roberto Mollá, New Works, at SCOPE Miami, with generous support from the Spain-based ARS FUNDUM Collection. SCOPE represents the first breakthrough opportunity to showcase Mollá’s powerful work in the U.S. The exhibition highlights paintings and drawings from his recent series, “32 Cortesanas de Minowa” (32 courtesans of Minowa). Mollá’s work is rooted in the Spanish tradition of painting, but is strongly influenced by Japanese anime and culture. His fantastic and magical hybrid animated characters come alive in love-hotel environments composed of muted tones within colorful geometric worlds. The Glowlab booth will feature his works on paper in the interior of an on-site installation designed to envelop the visitor within Mollá’s imaginary world. The intimacy of the small drawings conjures up stories influenced by manga and complex relationships at play within social constraints. Come discover Mollá’s “floating world” settings and see the work of one of the most important up-and-coming international artists of this year’s SCOPE Miami.

Fountain Miami is the alternative art fair known for presenting cutting-edge and independent art galleries and showcasing fresh work without official booth spaces or selection committee juries. Fountain was launched in March 2006 in New York, in an effort to leverage support for independent galleries largely overlooked by corporate-sponsored art fairs. In defiant contrast with Art Basel Miami Beach, Pulse, and the numerous other international art fairs, Fountain has received wide public support and critical acclaim for its guerilla-style experimental slant.

At Fountain Miami 2008, Glowlab presents large-scale installation work by Jason Cantoro, CutUp, Beka Goedde, David Hamill, Alice Jarry, David Kesting, Heather L. Johnson and Mark Price. A new work by up-and-coming photographer Lynnette Astaire will also be presented for the first time. In the open warehouse setting of Fountain, works on paper, prints, painting, photography and sculpture will highlight Glowlab’s focus on urban architecture and experimental structures in a collaborative environment. Special projects include a new site-specific sculptural assemblage by Beka Goedde, and a wall text and original works on paper by Mark Price.

Exhibition dates: November 13 – December 14, 2008
Opening reception: Thursday November 13, 6–8pm

Glowlab is pleased to present “New Works,” an exhibition by emerging multi-media artist Jason Cantoro. Cantoro takes North American urban cultural memory as a starting point for densely layered landscapes that push the limits of printmaking through a unique combination of painting, silkscreen printing and drawing. Remixing images of the past and present in nostalgic yet unsettling compositions, his mixed-media works portray spaces charged with potential where abandoned urban structures, characters from past eras and found, forgotten ephemera merge with delicate patterns and visual textures.

Cantoro’s new series represents a technical and creative breakthrough in silkscreen printing, from works on paper to multi-layered, screened collages on wood panels. Using special inks, Cantoro has discovered and developed a new means of printing images directly on wood to create texture and depth with a stunning, atmospheric quality. Glowlab Director Christina Ray states, “Jason’s latest works reflect influences both old and new where the dreamlike fluidity of the Impressionist movement meets the sampling, repetition and sonic layering found in DJ culture.”

From the studio to the street, Cantoro has been most recently exploring new techniques, mediums and venues for his work. Earlier this year, he received a Quebec government grant to produce a large-scale outdoor installation at street-level in Montréal which incorporates video both to document and animate the work. Along with artistic collaborator Alice Jarry, Cantoro recently completed a large and complex mural commissioned for the new uptown Manhattan location of chef Zak Pelaccio’s Fatty Crab restaurant.

Jason Cantoro was born, lives and works in Montréal. He holds a bachelor of visual arts from the University of Québec. He has participated in more than 20 group exhibitions in Canada and the United States over the past five years. In 2004 Cantoro and fellow printmaker and mixed media artist Alice Jarry co-founded Sérigraphie Cincqunquatre in the Centre-Sud neighborhood of Montréal.

Glowlab is pleased to present “Thirty Grand,” the inaugural exhibition at our new location in SoHo. The show features a preview of work by artists who will participate in solo and group exhibitions at the gallery in 2008-2009, including Jason Cantoro, CutUp, Beka Goedde, David Hamill, Alice Jarry, Heather L. Johnson, David Kesting, Roberto Mollá, Marisa Olson, Mark Price and Sal Randolph.

Glowlab Founder and Director Christina Ray develops the gallery’s exhibitions and events. For many years, Glowlab was located in a loft space in Williamsburg, and in 2006 was partially converted to a gallery space that was open by appointment. In September of this year, Ray moved into and renovated a storefront in SoHo. She states, “I’m excited to bring Glowlab into Manhattan. Our new space in SoHo is a good fit for us — this area near Deitch Projects and the Drawing Center has maintained a dynamic creative culture with artist projects and street art throughout the neighborhood.”

For “Thirty Grand,” Glowlab presents new prints and silkscreen works on panels by Jason Cantoro and Alice Jarry, two artists from Montreal who share a studio space and offer works rich with texture, and densely layered with collaged imagery gathered from sources ranging from old cityscapes to vintage airplanes, motorcycles and roller coasters. New York artist David Kesting’s wall drawings and works on paper offer a timely and often humorous look at street culture, with a particular focus on the current economic stresses impacting daily city life. Beka Goedde’s recently completed small multimedia works on paper examine the delicate balance of structures in the built environment. Sal Randolph’s latest project includes a series of free stickers and an invitation to express one’s opinion about voting both inside and outside the gallery space.

Glowlab collaborates with and present the work of artists exploring the convergence of art, technology and the urban environment. A series of artist-led talks and projects in the gallery is scheduled to begin toward the end of the year, and is in keeping with Ray’s goal of creating a true “lab” environment where artists and the public can meet and engage in dialogue. “Our represented artists, technologists and inspired thinkers are true social change agents, modeling progressive approaches to urban living.”
In other news, we just wrapped up another successful Conflux Festival complete with incredible projects, interventions, performances and lectures. Read about 2008 festival here. Many many many thanks to everyone who helped out with Conflux and our big move into the city. We couldn’t do it without you and we can’t wait to welcome you to the new gallery very soon!
